Adele: Surprising Stories Behind 5 of her Biggest Hits

Adele Laurie Blue Adkins, or just Adele, is one of the most widely recognizable musicians in the world. Her 2011 album, 21, has been certified 16 times platinum, earning the singer an impressive 6 grammy awards. Combined, her discography has sold more than 100 million copies, and some of her biggest hits topped the charts for longer than any other album released in the last two decades.
So, what’s the secret behind her Billboard success? Well, aside from her one of a kind voice and undeniable talent, her storytelling ability lets her connect with millions around the world. This short article will take a look at the great stories behind some of her biggest hits, revealing surprising details that managed to win over millions of fans.

1. Hometown Glory

Hometown-Glory
If you’re not an Adele superfan, then Hometown Glory might seem like a catchy ode to urban living. However, Adele revealed that the song was influenced by her mother’s request that she attend university out of the capital. Trying to make a point to her mother, Adele played the song as a protest, letting the world know that she would remain in South London. Another interesting thing to note, Adele says that she wrote the entire track in just ten minutes.

2. Rolling In The Deep

Rolling-In-The-Deep
Even if you don’t regularly listen to Adele, you’ve certainly heard this track. Written before the release of her best selling album 21, Rolling In The Deep was inspired by an ex-boyfriend. Adele says that the song was her way of saying “Get the f–k out of my house instead of begging him to come back.”
The production of the song is also quite interesting. Adele met up with her producer Paul Epworth, the night before she broke up with her boyfriend. She was so angry, and so full of passion that the two were able to write the song in less than two hours. While they were recording Adele asked Paul to feel her heart beat, which was racing out of anger. He responding by setting the beat to the same tempo, and the rest is history.

3. Someone Like You

Someone-Like-You
Similar to Rolling In The Deep, Someone Like You was also inspired by a horrible break up. The singer says that writing the song broke her heart even more, but watching her fans take it to heart helped her recover.
Adele explained that the song was actually about her looking forward. The star says that “[she] can imagine being 40 and looking for him again, only to find that he’s settled with a beautiful wife and kids, and is completely happy.” To further add to the mystery, the singer apparently wrote the song as soon as she found out that her ex had become engaged. She says that she was writing it at the end of her bed while waiting for her bath to run.

4 & 5. Turning Tables / Rumour Has It

Turning-Tables
Both Turning Tables and Rumour Has It were written with the help of Ryan Tedder. In fact, he wrote the first line of Turning Tables and the piano intro, and when he played it to Adele, she was taken aback. Story has it that Tedder didn’t know that she was going through another breakup, but the song ended up being spot on. At this point, two duo decided to pivot and make the song more autobiographical.
After recording, they immediately realized that they had a hit on their hands. While the song was in production, the pair worked on Rumour Has It. In a radio interview, Tedder said that the entire process took less than 10 minutes. Apparently Adele managed to record the whole song in one take, without missing a single note.
